Hoping these trailers show up...I was having trouble with embedding yesterday!
Oz the Great and Powerful
Until I read about Sam Raimi's "prequel" to the beloved Wizard of Oz classic, I was very skeptical. I tend to dislike sequels and prequels, but this one looks different. I read that it (like Wizard of Oz) is loosely based on L. Frank Baum's books for children and that Raimi intends it to be a nod to our favorite original film. It follows Oscar Diggs (the Wizard) on his journey from Kansas to Oz. We should see some familiar places (the Emerald City, Munchkinland, the yellow brick road), and I love that the movie begins in black and white and fades into color when Oscar reaches Oz. The trailer sold me:
The Great Gatsby
The girl who earned a degree in English, Speech, and Linguistics still lives inside my brain somewhere, and she is super-psyched about seeing F. Scott Fitzgerald's American masterpiece come to life on the big screen. And, if that's not enough for you, there's Leonardo DiCaprio, people! I don't think he's looked this good since Titanic. Swoon!
Safe Haven
I am realizing as I write this that so far my list includes films based on books. I'm going to be super-honest and tell you that I am not a particular Nicholas Sparks fan. His books and movies all seem to follow a formula. And they make me cry. That's embarrassing.
This formula seems to work for Sparks, so I can't really blame him. If ain't broke, don't fix it. Safe Haven looks like it might be a bit different, so when a friend suggested that we choose it for book club next month and go see the movie together, I agreed that it was a great idea. It's on my Winter Reading List anyways. Trailer? Looks exciting!
Identity Thief
One word: Funny! Jason Bateman always plays a great straight man, and Melissa McCarthy is downright hilarious. "I'm going after Bilbo."
What do you think? Anything that you've been looking forward to seeing?

I'm excited to see the Great Gatsby and the OZ movie is probably something I'll see with my kids instead. As for fave chick flick, my current fave is THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA, could watch that DVD anytime with my GFFs!
ReplyDeleteAmanda! What a fun post!!
ReplyDeleteI must say, Safe Haven is much much darker than most NS books. Bet you will really like it. He mixes it up a little, but not too much;)
That sparks formula is hilarious...and so true! I admit, Safe Haven looks pretty good. But I'll be catching that on the DVD...by myself! :)
ReplyDeleteAll of these are definitely on my must see list! Especially Oz! I cannot wait! :)
ReplyDeleteLooking forward to Oz and Jason Bateman! My fav chick flick is Crazy Stupid Love. Have u seen it?
ReplyDeleteWe don't do movies often either...it's just too expensive! I do think that Identity Thief looks hilarious! I saw a trailer for Oz a while back and didn't think I would like it, but your review makes me want to rethink that:)
ReplyDeleteThat "How to Write a Nicholas Sparks Movie" cracked me up. Ha.
ReplyDeleteI have high hopes that the new "Gatsby" will be better than the old one, which I remember being bored by in high school English class. The trailer looks good, anyway. :)
Been a fan of Melissa McCarthy's since "Gilmore Girls" and the trailer for "Identity Thief" looks hilarious. Will have to check that out.
Enjoyed taking a break today and watching these trailers. Thanks, Amanda! :)
