You're Only 100 Once

After a long Thursday night of packing, the girls and I loaded our stuff up, added my mom's (Mimi), and hopped in the Trailblazer for a road trip to North Carolina for my Nannie's 100th birthday party. The trip was relatively easy...little to no traffic and silence in the back seat, thanks to the fabulous portable DVD player.

Whoever invented those ought to be granted sainthood. Not a peep for almost an hour!

We arrived in little bitty, sleepy "S City" around lunchtime and grabbed lunch at the McDonald's because really eating anything out of Nannie's fridge is like playing Russian roulette. We think that is partly why she has lived to 100.

My mom and aunt grew up in Northern Virginia, and my grandparents didn't actually move back to S City until the mid-1990s. But my grandfather was born and raised there, and his family history goes back some years there. I love history, and I love small towns, so it was cool to drive through the older parts and have my mom point things out to me that she remembered from childhood visits.

My great-grandfather was an architect, and some of the buildings he planned are still standing...

This mural just says "small town America" to me. I love it!

Mimi says this house used to be really lovely and everyone knew that the "Mrs. S." who lived there could heal you if she touched you. We saw several beautiful old homes that looked like they needed some TLC.

The party was Saturday afternoon, and attended by mostly family. Nannie has been wined and dined for the better part of a month now as one of the town's oldest residents. When they had her up to the courthouse for a surprise "proclamation, " she was afraid they were going to take her driver's license away. After all that excitement, we felt like something low key would be best.

My girls got to love on their great-grandmother...

...even when she yelled at them to pick their Barbies up. It was a flashback to my childhood. The girls learned fast to react if we said "you better not do that or Nannie will get mad."

One of my mom's cousins made the cake, and it was fabulous! I get my love of cake from Nannie.

Lots of time to hang out with cousins we don't normally see, and we were able to relax some with my brother, his wife, and my nephew ("Baby J").

For those of you who wondered how she'd like the gift I made for her, she was relatively unimpressed, but she did smile and say "thank you" so I will consider it a success.

I have to admit that it made me a little twitchy to be unable to check my email for three days; and with no Starbucks in sight, SuSu and I went on a hunt and found a sweet little coffee shop downtown.

We needed the coffee because the baby kept SuSu up and I had to share a room with the girls- a fate that should be reserved for people serving hard time. They are quite unpleasant to room with, as they fought over everything from who got the softest side of the blanket to whose pillow was bigger. They also wake when the sunlight begins streaming through the curtains and do not yet grasp the meaning of "quiet morning whispers."

But it was a nice little weekend get-away, and a blessing to be able to wish my grandmother a belated Happy Birthday in person.

{Have you had any fun get-aways lately?}

Keepsake Family Photo Collage Frame Tutorial

Today I'm going to show you how I took some random wallet size photos and turned them into a keepsake gift for my grandmother.

My Nannie turned 100 last month. I don't know if you know this, but that's a whole lot of birthdays. This means that she is very difficult to impress. You would be too if you had 100 years' worth of birthday gift experience under your belt. It was very serendipitous that I had the opportunity to try a resin product recently after deciding to make a gift for my Nannie for the family party in NC this weekend.

Supplies:

  • EnviroTex Lite (pour-on resin)
  • Elmer's Glue All or Mod Podge
  • Paper Plate and Foam Brush
  • Flat Wood Picture Frame from from Hobby Lobby's craft department ($2.39 with my coupon)
  • Black Spray Paint and Sandpaper (not pictured)
  • Wallet Sized Photos (not pictured)

My first step was to sand my plain wood frame down, dust it off, and spray paint it black. I used extra cheap spray paint from Wal-Mart because that's what I had on hand, and one coat was perfect. Surprise! When the paint was dry, I lightly sanded the edges of the frame to bring some of the details out.

The most difficult part of the project was choosing the photos I wanted to use. I decided to use a photo of each grandchild (me, my sister, and my brother), our spouses, and the four great-grandchildren.

The Kodak kiosk at Target has an awesome feature that lets you add multiple photos to one 4 x 6 sheet to create wallet sized photos. I made each picture black and white, and printed 3 sheets for around $0.75.

When my pictures were all trimmed out, I laid them out on the top of the frame to see what would look best.

The photos on the side needed a tiny bit of extra trimming to make the spacing even. Once that was finished, I poured some Elmers Glue-All (Interior) onto a paper plate and used a foam brush to apply glue to the back of each photo and lay them down, smoothing them flat. When that was dry, another layer of glue went on top.

The result was a matte look:

That would be fine for many projects, but I wanted something that looked really finished. That's where the EnviroTex Lite comes in. In all honesty, many of the projects I saw on the company website link I found looked really outdated, and I was scared to use a product that called for gloves. I even made T help me!

But my fears were completely unfounded. The product was very easy to use, and it didn't have that heavy, yellowy sheen to the finished product that I've seen in a many resin pieces.

I used push pins on the back of the frame to keep it from sticking to the wax paper lined box T found for me to use. We followed the instructions, and I had T mix the compounds together in one cup before adding them to a second cup and pouring immediately over the frame after mixing.

T is much better with precision, so he was in charge of mixing and pouring:

The resin went on like a very thick, smooth, liquid gel. It was thick enough that it pretty much coated the frame itself as T poured it on.

I used the brush included with the product to brush the resin onto the sides of the frame, and we lightly blew out the tiny bubbles the rose to the surface. Then I closed the top of the box and let it sit in the Addition for a full 24 hours while the resin hardened.

And I fell in love with the results!

The finish is so much easier to see in person, but it's like looking at my photos under a sheet of crystal clear glass. It's the neatest thing!

I finished the piece off by quickly creating something in MS Publisher to fit in the frame:

Final Product?

I hope my Nannie likes this as much as I do!

Setting Up Our Vegetable Garden

Two summers ago, we started our first vegetable garden...and by "vegetable garden," I mean three tomato plants and some overgrown thyme. You have to start somewhere, right?

We had mixed results. There was a bumper crop of tomatoes, but I lost heart after the mail lady saw me in my canning apron and asked when I was due (I was not expecting) and then I went inside and my apron caught on fire. True Story. It was a super fun day.

We had good intentions last year, but every time T took a weekend off, I had somewhere to go, or he had somewhere to go. It just never happened. And then I spent the whole summer admiring other bloggers' vegetable gardens online and being insanely jealous over their fresh produce.

This year, we vowed not to let anything get in the way of our dreams of fresh vegetables straight from our own yard. It took us a couple of weeks because T hurt his back, but I am pleased to say our garden is in and we have life back there!

We started with a pretty rough Before:

Our back yard is just over half an acre, and the area to the left of our addition is the perfect spot for a garden. We can't use it for much else, as the entrance to the crawl space and a sump pump are there.

T started by marking off the area to be tilled with some stakes and leftover boards from his parents' house.

He spread some compost out over the area and then used his dad's rototiller to till the soil and mix everything up really well. Some people were really excited to watch...

T made sure to dig down far enough to place the first layer of boards, drilling them into the stakes for support.

The next layer went right on top and was also drilled into the stakes:

The girls "planted" their own stick garden.

After, with a few tomato plants from T's parents:

Soon, it was my turn to work. I really wanted to do lettuce, but it was too late in the season, so we settled on:

  • Tomatoes
  • Green, Red, and Yellow Bell Peppers
  • Two Melon Plants
  • Chives (from his parents)
  • Zucchini
  • Strawberries (Natalie's personal request)

I don't have a spot indoors to nurture seedlings, so we purchased plants this year from our local nursery.

It's been so much fun to peek out the window each morning and 1) Make sure there are no rabbits eating my stuff and 2) Watch the plants grow. Our garden is really coming along....this shot was taken last night:

There are still some major updates that need to be made in our yard. I had T till up the ground in front of the fence, next to the garden. I planted some peony plants, some potted rosemary and more tomatoes, and I have two small knock out rose bushes waiting to go in as well. I'd love to have a nice border between us and the neighbors that doesn't give us a straight on view of our lovely chain-link fence. I'm pretty sure I have a window box that can hang on the fence behind the garden to grow some more herbs.

What about you?

{Do you enjoy gardening, or do you get produce on the produce aisle (where I buy my lettuce!)?
