Kitchen Light Fixture Makeover (Spray Paint)

One of my Fall DIY and Craft To Do List items was to paint and update the kitchen. That project has been a painstakingly slow process, due to some unforeseen repairs we've had to make from hurricane leaks and a DIY horror story I'll save for another day. Today, I wanted to show you a mini-project I completed with the help of my friends at Krylon. This "before and after" light fixture makeover makes a big difference in the look of my sink area...for a very small cost!

Here's the only shot I could find of the awful, original flush mount fixture that lived over my sink for so long. Completely B.L.A.H.:
"Before" Shot of Kitchen Light, from Serenity Now

I dreamed of a pretty pendant light, but it wasn't a possibility with the way the studs and window are situated in the kitchen. Plan B was spending $44.97 on a semi-flush mount light from Allen and Roth. Technically, I got this baby for FREE because I used a gift card! I liked the oil rubbed bronze finish, but it wasn't going to work with the plans I have for the rest of the kitchen:

Time to call in the big guns! Krylon sent a case of their fabulous Dual Spray Paint in white. This is, hands-down, my absolute favorite spray paint. I spray paint a lot of things. Lamps, furniture, accessories, my hands.  I love the Dual because it's paint and primer in one can! It goes on with a nice, smooth finish and it rarely takes me more than one or two coats to complete a project. My new kitchen fixture took just one coat!

Here's another little "Before" shot:

I made sure to tape it off really well:

And a "semi-After" shot:

I say "semi" because the white drywall mud is clearly visible, and we haven't been able to paint yet. But I love my new white fixture so much that I had to show it to you! I actually like that the fixture blends in with the ceiling a bit, and when the entire area has been fixed up, it will all come together. Having the fixture up high spreads the light around that area of the kitchen...I think a pendant would have directed the light downwards too much.

While this isn't a life-changing before and after post, I'm thrilled with this one little step forward and can't wait to continue forward with our DIY progress. This kitchen will sport an updated look soon!

Have you ever spray painted a light fixture before?

*Disclosure: Krylon provided me with the Dual for review purposes, but I was not financially compensated for this post. All opinions are, as always, my own.

  2. I have spray painted practically everything in our house, including lamps, but never before a light fixture. Your new pendant looks great! I'm eager to see more of your kitchen; hope there are no more surprises.

I have loved Krylon products for so many years, it's embarrassing. But I've never tried the Dual product. Thanks for the tip!

  5. This is awesome! Spray paint is amazing, no? I've been thinking about buying some lamps at GoodWill and spraying them for awhile, but to be honest, I wasn't sure if it could. Thanks for the inspiration, maybe I will do it now.

  7. Isn't spray paint the awesomest?! :) We painted all of our ceiling fans when we bought our house three years ago. The were terrible brown and bronze (circa 1982) but had crazy strong motors and really cooled down the rooms well. Why spend money to replace something just because it's ugly? One of my friends even painted her whole patio set!

  12. Cute light fixture Amanda! I love vintage looking ones. In our kitchen we have the original ones that came with the house that was built in '52. Can't wait to see what you have planned for the kitchen!! =)

  13. This looks great! And I love the style of fixture you chose. It's a great look. I sprayed all the bases of our schoolhouse fixtures. They were brass (they were vintage) and I wanted them to be oil-rubbed bronze.

  15. Wow, good one Amanda! I have painted a 'light fixture' before if you consider a lamp base painting!

  16. I like the new fixture. I haven't done a fixture, but I sure might try it seeing how well the Dual spray paint covers.
